VPN (Virtual Private Network)

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) connects various networks by creating a secure, encrypted connection via a public network (e.g. the internet).

A Virtual Private Network allows for secure connections between heterogeneous networks, i.e. the networks need not be compatible. Firms often use VPN access to integrate employees into the firm's network via the internet.

To access a VPN a special program, a VPN client, needs to be installed on all computers. Communication between members of a Virtual Private Network is similar to communication within a local network.
